Brief Writing
Organization: Fair Fight Action
Volunteer Activity
During early voting and on Election Day, there will be a myriad of legal issues that arise for which we will need quick answers. We are looking for volunteers who will be available to provide quick brief writing as needed. We are focused on legal issues arising in twelve states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.
Why it’s Important
During early voting and on Election Day, we want to be able to provide support for voters as well as individuals and entities who support voters (e.g. - GOTV organizations, absentee ballot drives, poll watchers, voter education efforts). Legal issues may arise that require a range of responses, including brief writing in anticipation for litigation. We need to ensure that we have in place adequate legal resources to provide quick and persuasive briefs as issues arise.
Timeframe
The need for drafting is immediate and will continue throughout early voting and into Election Day.
Mandatory Time Commitment: 5-10 hours per writing assignment.
Qualifications
The person must be trained as an attorney and barred in any state.
Geographic Preference
There is no geographic preference. This work can be done remotely.
Declaration Collection
Organization: Fair Fight Action
During early voting and on Election Day, voters will experience, unfortunately, many issues at the polls and with absentee voting that in many cases may be indicative of attempts at voter suppression by state and local governments. We want to collect and document voter stories through declarations. We are focused on collecting declarations in twelve states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.
Many voters whose votes were burdened and/or have been completely disenfranchised feel like their issues were their own fault, or that no one cares about their experiences. Listening to peoples’ stories and collecting their declarations is an important way to help ensure that these voters’ voices are heard. Also, declarations have been becoming essential and persuasive evidence in election-related civil rights litigation. The stories help to personalize the legal issues and create an important narrative for courts to visualize how failures in elections systems disenfranchise or unconstitutionally burden voters.
Declaration collection is an ongoing project; we collect declarations throughout election cycles and as people determine whether their absentee ballots were counted after Election Day. The need for volunteers is most crucial beginning in the early voting period and through the deadline for counting absentee ballots.
Mandatory Time Commitment: Unlimited (for efficiency purposes, we ask that volunteers commit to at least 10 hours).
The person does not need to be an attorney and does not need to be barred in any specific state.
